Writing samples

This is a collection of writing samples from different projects, ranging from interactive fiction and dialogue to item descriptions and a cutscene script.

Interactive fiction:
Bird House

These are two interludes from Bird House, a short game about someone inheriting their mother's house. The interludes sit in between chapters of gameplay where the player navigates the house at different times.

The first interlude shown here functions as a prologue before chapter 1, and the second sits just before the final chapter.

Item descriptions:
Bird House

These are a selection of item descriptions from Bird House, a short game about someone inheriting their mother's house. The item descriptions are meant to be subjective to the player character's perspective, and provide additional context to the player's actions and current situation.

I focused on fleshing out the Mum character through small details, as well as setting up the player character's relationship to their childhood past.

Images of each item are provided for more context. In the game, the player encounters the text while picking up and examining each item.

Cutscene script:
Last Minute Magic

This is the script for the introductory cutscene to Last Minute Magic, a game consisting of a series of minigames all revolving around a young witch girl getting ready for a party.

The goal of the cutscene was to give context to each of the minigames, as well as the central timing mechanic, where the player is given limited overall time, but gains back time with each completed minigame.

Tonally, my goal was to strike a whimsical tone and set up a world that's playful and friendly, mixing the fantastical with the mundane.

Apart from writing the text I had a large hand in storyboarding and implementing the cutscene itself. It can be seen here:

(Wendy, in bed, frazzled & excited)

It is the third day of the seventh moon, and it's Wendy the witch's 13th birthday!

(Each of Wendy's witch friends, all a little cooler than her)

Her friends are on their way and Wendy is super excited!

(Wendy, closeup, shaken)

Her mother knocks on the door for the third time.

(Same image, Mom in door, tired & annoyed)

"You're still in bed? Don't you need to get ready?"

(Wendy, increasingly freaked out, each task as a thought bubble above her head)

"You haven't cleaned your room... the rats are everywhere... and what about the shadow demons doing the entertainment?!"

(text message)

"Be there in one minute!"

(Wendy, regaining her confidence, magical hourglass turning)

But she's not worried. One minute can be more than you think with a little... Last Minute Magic!

The Doctor created you for a specific purpose.
What was it?
How is it different from how you live your life now?

You once dreamt of going unnoticed among humans.
What made you abandon this dream?

For a long time, you never thought you’d get to grow old.
How do you now imagine your old age?

There are things you cannot do with your body as it is now.
What do you wish you could do more than anything?

One of your body parts is hard to get used to.
What do you do to become more comfortable in your body?

One of the others annoys you.

How do they remind you of yourself?

You look up to one of the others.

What is special about them?

How do you think they see you?

The laboratory is cramped, and outside the snow is piling up.

Where do you go for privacy?

What do you do when you are alone?

You sometimes miss the Doctor.

What do you miss about him?

Who do you share this with, if anyone?

Question cards:
The Doctor Is Gone

This is a selection of player prompts for players to answer about their characters from the card-based roleplaying game The Doctor Is Gone.

Players take turns drawing random cards and answering questions, thereby fleshing out their characters and building a story.

Each player takes on the role of a monster created by the Doctor from different body parts. The premise of the game is that the monsters have gotten rid of the Doctor and taken over his laboratory, which now allows them to make new bodies for themselves. The game explores themes of queerness and belonging.
